Suspect Accused of Beating Woman with Hammer

A Las Vegas man is under arrest and charged with attempted murder after hitting a woman with a hammer.

Police arrested Desmond Stewart, 25 of Las Vegas on attempted murder, battery, two counts of domestic violence-strangulation and coercion by force.

According to Metro Police, the incident happened at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at an apartment near Craig Road and Nellis Boulevard.

Police say officers were called to the apartment complex on a report that a woman had been beaten with a hammer. When they arrived, witnesses told officers that the suspect and the victim were in a nearby Wal-Mart parking lot.

Officers found Stewart and the victim, Shauntejia Dupree, who was covered in blood.

According to the arrest report, Dupree and Stewart had been dating for about three weeks and had just moved into together nine days before the incident. Dupree's sister and her husband were playing dominos with the couple, when Dupree beat Stewart at the game, police said.

Stewart became enraged and started strangling Dupree. He then took out a hammer from a bag that he had and hit Dupree on the side of the head, according to police.

Dupree's sister also told police that he had threatened her in the past, telling her he would cut off her arms and legs and pull out her teeth.
