Metro Police are practicing their PIT maneuvers and chase technique during classroom and live-action training Thursday near Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Commonly referred to as a Precision or Pursuit Immobilization Technique, the PIT maneuver is often used by police to stop drivers attempting to flee, forcing it to abruptly turn sideways and come to a stop.

As recently as 2004, police averaged 269 chases per year. There were just 39 chases in 2011. Supervisors now monitor fleeing vehicles and air units assist in tracking as well.
