Two Major NHRA Drag Racing Events at LVMS in 2013

Drag racing will continue to be a major part of the schedule at Las Vegas Motor Speedway next year.

For the 13th consecutive year, The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host two NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series national events. The two 2013 NHRA event dates in Las Vegas will be April 5-7 (14th annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals) and Oct. 24-27 (13th annual NHRA Big O Tires Nationals).

“The spring race has been a tradition at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since the NHRA’s first race here in 2000,” said LVMS president Chris Powell. “The fall event allows us to take advantage of the annual Nevada Day (Oct. 25) festivities.”

LVMS’s fall event also is the next-to-last race in the NHRA’s six-race Countdown to One series, which will determine season champions in Top Fuel Dragster, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Bike.

This weekend’s NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will feature some of drag racing’s top drivers.

Headlining the three-day event are Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown, both former winners at LVMS.

Schumacher has posted six career wins at The Strip, two of which came in the spring race in 2004 and 2009. He also earned No. 1 Qualifier status eight times here. Brown has recorded only one career victory in Las Vegas and is defending champion of the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals after defeating Brandon Bernstein in the final round.

“I definitely love racing out there,” Brown added. “It’s a spectacular place – one of the best venues we go to all year. The weather is usually perfect to make a bunch of power, so I know my guys will be trying to take a healthy cut at it with each lap we make.”

Midnight Mayhem Street Racing Returns to Speedway

Midnight Mayhem Street Racing Returns to Speedway

Street racing goes legal again Friday night in the northeast part of the valley.

The next Dodge Midnight Mayhem Presented By Tony Rowe Enterprises’ Operation Street Legal will take place at 7 p.m.

Midnight Mayhem is The Strip at LVMS’ safe alternative to illegal street racing. Instead of street racing illegally on the roads of Las Vegas and Clark County, The Strip at LVMS encourages enthusiasts to race each other on the safer confines of its NHRA-sanctioned drag strip. Fourteen Dodge midnight Mayhem events are scheduled for 2012.

Now in its 11th year, Midnight Mayhem is open to any licensed driver with proof of insurance and any street-legal car or motorcycle (vehicle must be registered – no temporary tags are permitted).
