Nellis AFB to Host Adapted Sports Camp

Nellis Air Force Base will host one of two adapted sports camps authorized by the Air Force this weekend.

The camps will show wounded service members and veterans how to participate in cycling, seated volleyball, swimming, track and field, air rifle and pistol shooting and wheelchair basketball.

The camp is a qualifying event for the Warrior Games Team. The Warrior Games features wounded members of the military and veterans in paralympic sports. The competition encourages them to stay physically active and mentally positive.

Legal Street Racing Returns to Speedway

An annual effort to reduce street racing danger hits The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway at the end of the month.

MOPAR Midnight Mayhem will take place for a 12th year from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. June 28. It is open to any street-legal vehicle and any licensed driver.

Entry fee is $15 to race or ride along, and $5 admission for spectators. Restricted-area passes also are available for $15.

The resort will offer a two-for-one lift ticket special to various service workers throughout the month, beginning with public service workers.

The grand opening of phase two of the Raptor Play Park in the Thunderbird Family Sports Complex will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.

The 10-acre sports complex is located at 6105 N. Durango Drive, at the northwest corner of Tropical Parkway and Durango. Some light refreshments will be available.

The F-22 Raptor is the centerpiece of the park, appearing to fly above a monument plaza with contrail-shaped curved steel beams anchored in a concrete base providing support. The Raptor was selected due to its use in the 57th Wing at Nellis Air Force Base. The Thunderbird Family Sports Complex pays tribute to the United States Air Force and all military families in the  valley.

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada is offering special anniversary pricing on Camp Foxtail registration as a celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouting. Save $100 on resident summer camp with session prices ranging from $50 to $295.

Camp Foxtail is located in the cool in the cool Spring Mountain Range, just 45 minutes from Las Vegas.

Summer sessions run through August 17 and a 10-day pre-registration is required.  Registration is available at girlscoutsnv.org.

Dream Racing Offers Fast Times at the Speedway

There is a new way to race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Dream Racing officially opened its doors Tuesday at the speedway. The company allows people to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari F430 GT. The car is the only non-street legal Ferrari in Las Vegas. It has been modified specifically for racing with a top speed of 200 miles per hour.

"The driving experience is unique because the car first of all is a red Ferrari non-street legal car: easy but fast. We have a big lounge, big simulator room, classroom.  Everything is first class," Enreco Bertaggia the founder of Dream Racing said.

Playground, Water Area Among Upgrades at Alexander Villas Park

 

A Nellis-area park will show off its new upgrades Saturday at a grand reopening party.

New playground equipment and an improved and much larger water play area are among the amenities added to the Alexander Villas Park, 3620 Lincoln Road, where a celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The park is near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard North and Lamb Boulevard.

There will be face painting, balloon artists, bounce houses and food at the free event. Representatives from the Clark County Commission District D Office, which oversees this area, will also be at the event.
