98th Range Wing Re-Designated

The 98th Range Wing was inactivated and re-designated in a ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base Tuesday morning.

During the ceremony, Colonel John Montgomery, commander of the 98th Range Wing relinquished command. Colonel Kenneth Thompson assumed command of the Nevada Test and  Training Range. Col. Thompson is a former defense and air attache to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt.  Like the 98th Range Wing, the NTTR will remain a direct reporting unit to the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center. The NTTR will manage, operate and maintain the 2.9 million acre area northeast of Las Vegas. That range includes 12,000 square miles of military airspace plus more than 1,000 military members, civilian personnel and contractors are assigned to it.  The Nevada Test and Training Range is one of the largest contiguous air and ground space available for military operations in the world. The range is used for high-tech training of some of the most elite forces in the military.
