Department of Defense Creates New Medal for New Breed of Warriors | News
The Department of Defense has created a new medal for extraordinary achievements by service member's that directly impact combat operations.
The Distinguished Warfare Medal is for service members who use modern technology, like drones, to impact military operations. With new technology, many warriors do not even have to be near combat to be part of the operations and impact the outcome.
"I have seen first-hand how modern tools like remotely piloted platforms and cyber systems have changed the way wars can be fought," said Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta. "We should also have the ability to honor extraordinary actions that make a true difference in combat operations, even if those actions are physically removed from the fight."
Based on the order of precedence, the Distinguished Warfare Medal will be directly below the Distinguished Flying Cross. It will awarded for actions in a combat theatre but not acts involving valor.
