Man Sentenced in 4-Year-Old's Staged Death

LAS VEGAS -- The man who killed a 4-year-old boy and tried to make the death look accidental was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday.

Judge Douglas Herndon sentenced 24-year-old Trevor Carter to life with the possibility of parole after 17 years.

Carter who killed Trenton Quick in 2007 was found guilty of second degree murder. Initially, police thought Quick died in a car accident near I-215 and Losee Rd., but after investigating, police determined that the car accident was staged to make the death look accidental. A coroner found that Quick died after being hit in the stomach.

"He said he lost control, had this horrible accident and that Trenton was injured. It was only later that he admitted to police that wasn't quite true," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Vickie Monroe.

Carter did make a brief statement in court during his sentencing. He told the court he had no excuse or reason for what happened to Trenton.

"It's something I have to live with the rest of my life," he said.

Carter was the boyfriend of the boy's mother, Amber Scott.  She was also charged in the case with abuse and neglect. She reached a plea deal and is now awaiting her sentencing in July.
