Helicopter to Drop Easter Eggs at Special Hunt

Tens of thousands of plastic Easter eggs will drop from the sky at Egg Drop Vegas on April 16.

The unique Easter egg event will take place at Seastrand Park in North Las Vegas from 9 a.m. to noon. Beginning at 9 a.m., the activities feature face painting, bounce houses, live music, delicious food and more. At approximately 10:30 a.m., a helicopter will hover over the park and drop 25,000 Easter eggs to kick off the giant Easter egg hunt. Children will collect empty plastic Easter eggs and then exchange those eggs for candy.

Visitors are encouraged to bring canned goods to help City Mission of Las Vegas. Egg Drop is a free community event sponsored by Grace Point Church, the City of North Las Vegas and other community organizations.

City Receives Prize from Reader's Digest

The City of North Las Vegas received a $1,000 prize through the Reader's Digest "We Hear You America" campaign and tour, and could have a shot at a $40,000 prize as well.

The prize money will be used to offer a free day at a community pool for children.

The campaign is intended to bring money and attention to towns across America that have been most affected by the economic downturn. By the tour's end, the campaign will have hit 100 American cities.

Reader's Digest tour representatives presented the check to North Las Vegas Mayor Shari L. Buck Wednesday morning.

"I'm really pleased we were selected," Buck said. "We are a great town, but because of these tough economic times, we've had to close some community pools.

Relay For Life seeks participants

Relay For Life seeks participants

The American Cancer Society is looking for participants for its Relay For Life fundraiser in April and May.

Ten relays will take place in southern Nevada during the next two months and ACS will hold a number of "Paint the Town Purple" recruiting events from April 4-7. During these events, relay committee members and team captains will be visiting area businesses encouraging community members to participate. In addition to Relay’s purple posters, volunteers will distribute purple lollipops, because "CANCER SUCKS."

Those events include: 

  • Cheeburger Cheeburger Fundraiser – Monday, April 4, 5-9 p.m., 8390 S. Rainbow Blvd.

 

  • CiCi’s Pizza Las Vegas Fundraiser – Wednesday, April 6, six locations, all day/night – 10-20 percent of sales go to ACS.

 

  • Beer Tasting Benefit - Thursday, April 7 at Freakin Frog, 7-10 p.m., 4700 S.

Helldorado Parade entries being accepted

Helldorado Parade entries being accepted

It's not too early to plan your entry for the 2011 Helldorado Parade. The 2011 parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. There is no fee to enter and the City of Las Vegas will be accepting the first 120 entries now through April 25.

Thousands of people line the downtown parade route every year, and the parade is also broadcast live by Cox Communications on cable channel 96 and streamed online at http://www.cox96.net/. KCLV Channel 2 will re-broadcast the parade in the following days. A fireworks show will be launched from the Fremont Street Experience parking garage immediately after the parade.

The city's annual Hellorado Days festivities are a tribute to the anniversary of the city of Las Vegas. This year marks the city's 106th anniversary of the founding of Las Vegas. Entrants are encouraged to consider these Western roots when planning their parade applications.

LVMPD Hosts Graffiti Clean Up March 19th

The officers of the LVMPD, Northeast area invite you to join them this Saturday for a community improvement project! They will be meeting March 19th from 9am to noon to clean up graffiti in the area of Lake Mead and Marion. Volunteers will be meeting at  Miller Elementary School at 4851 E. Lake Mead, and are asked to wear proper clothing to work with paint. All cleaning supplies will be provided, as will water and refreshments. So come out and beautify the community this Saturday with the officers iof the LVMPD!

NLVPD vs USAF Thunderbirds Charity Softball Game

This Saturday March 12th at noon, the officers of the North Las Vegas Police will face-off against the United States Air Force Thunderbirds in the 8th annual charity softball game. The event will include performances by the NLVPD Honor Guard and K-9 team, autograph signings by the USAF Thunderbirds, on-site food vendors, and a raffle. 

The game will take place at at Mojave High School, located at 5302 Goldfield Street. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Raul Elizondo Elementary School, named in honor of North Las Vegas Police Officer Raul Elizondo, who was killed in the line of duty in 1995. This annual fund-raising effort serves to remember Officer Elizondo's commitment to our community. Last year's event raised just over $1,600 used by the school to improve their library.

Just a reminder, everyone- Daylight Savings Time starts up this Sunday. Everyone needs to set their clocks ahead by one hour. Make sure you get to bed early on Saturday, as you will have one less hour to sleep in on Sunday!
