Metro investigates early morning shooting death

One man is dead and another wounded in an early morning shooting near Nellis Air Force Base.

Metro homicide detective, Lt. Dan McGrath, said it started as an argument outside the Craigmont Villas apartments on North Lamont St, near Craig Rd and Nellis Blvd. That fight escalated into an exchange of gunfire around 12:40 a.m.

The victims were transported to University Medical Center. An African-American man in his 30's died. Another man was shot in the leg and should recover. The second victim may have been an innocent bystander, according to police.

One of the gunmen claims the shooting was self defense. He was not wounded, stayed on the scene, and called 911 to report the shooting.

Metro police say the man who was not injured used a high-powered rifle and that some of the bullets went through the walls of other apartment units. Officers went to each unit to make sure no one else was hurt.

Investigators could not immediately say if the gunman would be arrested or face charges. Homicide investigators are hoping to interview people who saw the fight.

"Any time there's a shooting outside in the middle of a complex, it would be difficult to claim self-defense," said McGrath. "We believe he had to go get a rifle."

Metro detectives were expected to be on the scene for hours, canvassing the crime scene.
