Man leaves dog poop in box for package thieves

Christmas is all about the spirit of giving, but when some thieves decided to make the holiday season about taking -- a local man devised a plan to teach them a lesson.

"A friend two doors down had his truck broken into," Steve Easley said, crafty Las Vegas resident who pulled one over on thieves.

Easley said he left a "special gift" that the thieves stealing from homes in his neighborhood near Rancho and Oakey would never forget.

Easley says he put a UPS box outside his front door -- but there wasn't an expensive gift waiting inside the box. Instead, there was: "A box of poop," Easley said.

And you can thank Steve's 4-year-old Lab Lucky for the poop.

Easley said he placed the package outside his home Wednesday night. The man was caught on a surveillance camera around 9:30 the next morning.

Steve came home from work that afternoon: "And the box was gone," he said.

"I keep imagining what his thoughts were when he opened up a box of dog poop," Easley said.

Easley said he's never seen the man captured on video. He says he plans on reporting the incident to Metro Police.

"I keep thinking how awful it is that somebody could come into your neighborhood and steal something in just a few hours," Easley said.

But Lucky's special gift may have thieves re-thinking things.

"I guess if you're bad you'll get a lump of coal, but if you're really bad, you'll get a box of poop," according to Easley.

To avoid package thieves people expecting deliveries also have the option to require a signature for their package once it's delivered.

Anyone who recognizes the man in the video is asked to call Metro Police or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
