Nellis honors military this holiday season

A magical winter wonderland came to life Sunday for local military families.

It was thanks to a community effort to help those who serve our country, especially during the holidays.

While military members are overseas protecting our country, their families don't get to be with them over the holidays. The Nellis Support Team and the Las Vegas Country Club organized for military spouses a holiday party.

"You know it makes it less lonely you feel more as a family when you are together with squadrons," Military wife Yvonne Bellisario said. "Especially when you are with someone that is in the same squadron as you and their husbands are deployed as well."

Over 100 family military families of deployed Nellis and Creech Air Force base airmen were treated to a top notch holiday meal. Plus lots of entertainment for kids including clowns, face painting and even a special visit from Santa.

Organizers say while those serving our country are on a mission overseas, they want to make sure families are cared for locally.

"You've got both the demands of the job and Nellis is a base that deploys around the world, "Col. Zev York of Vice Wing Commander 99th Airbase Nellis wing said. "Right about now we've got over 600 folks deployed between Nellis and Creech so some of the folks here one of the family members is likely deployed so just giving them a little extra care and attention over the holidays. It's great."

With so many smiling faces at Sunday's holiday party, families 8 News NOW spoke to say the Las Vegas community is especially welcoming and warm, not just during the holidays but throughout the year.
