Teen Shot and Killed at Friend's Birthday Party

LAS VEGAS --  A birthday party early Sunday morning turned deadly after a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed.

Metro was called to a house in the area of Nellis and Lake Mead around 1 a.m. after receiving reports of someone being shot.

Police found the teen girl suffering from a gun shot wound to the head. She was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to eyewitnesses, the party was for another girl celebrating her 18th birthday. The party was being held at her house. Police say there was an altercation outside of the house and the brother of the 18-year-old girl went upstairs and grabbed his shotgun went back outside and fired a shot in the air to attempt to break up the incident.

Police say once the incident was over, the brother went back upstairs to put the shotgun away and the weapon accidentally fired a shot straight through the floor striking the 17-year-old girl, who was downstairs on the first floor.

It is unclear if any charges have been filed yet.
