Crime

LAS VEGAS -- An east Las Vegas apartment complex is the scene of a homicide investigation. The incident happened just before 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning near Lake Mead Blvd. and Christy Lane.

"We know our suspects possibly came to this residence with two other people, knocked on the door of the residence and, when the victim answered the door, the shooting started," Metro Police Lt. Lew Roberts said.

The victim who opened the door died when bullets struck her in the head. The bullets also hit the woman's 12-year-old daughter.

"She underwent surgery and is in very critical condition," Lt. Roberts said Saturday evening.

Lieutenant Roberts says Metro is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. "We don't have a motive at this time as to why this shooting occurred," Lt. Roberts said. "We have been able to piece a few things together."

Family and friends rushed to the scene as they heard the news. "It's pretty hard to hold up when something like this happens," said family friend Robert Austin.

The grieving father of the dead victim tried running up to his daughter's apartment as her body was being removed. He told crews, "I just want to see my daughter," before he was escorted away.

Austin says the murder of the young mother was senseless. "She's a pretty good mother, real good daughter," he said. "She's close to her family. She looks out for her other siblings. She's like the big sister of the family." Family members say the woman killed is 25-year-old Derecia Newman.

As for the suspects, Metro says they have very vague descriptions at this point. The suspects were last seen getting into a dark-colored car. This is the 72nd homicide in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
