Earthquake rumbles north of Ridgecrest, Calif., effects felt in downtown Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An earthquake with an epicenter north of Ridgecrest, California, was felt in downtown Las Vegas Thursday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey gave it a preliminary rating of 5.0. The quake occurred around 1:49 p.m.

2016 prison killing tied to white supremacist gang members arrested in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A father has been waiting for years to see the two men, he says, killed his son, get arrested. Those arrests happened this week when federal agents took nearly two dozen people into custody. They are allegedly members of the Aryan Warriors white supremacist gang.

Andrew Thurgood, 26, was killed in 2016 at High Desert State Prison north of Las Vegas. He was serving a sentence for driving a stolen car.

Former CCSD employee arrested for allegedly trying to sexually exploit minors

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A former Clark County School District employee has been arrested for allegedly trying to exploit youth sexually. Sean David Rix, 53, is charged with two counts of Attempted Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Minor.

Detectives within the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office have been working undercover for the past several months targeting individuals who are using the internet to lure minors for sexual exploitation, as a result of the most recent operation, Rix, who lives in Las Vegas, was arrested.

Rix was taken into custody Metro Police for the warrants issued by Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. Rix, who was employed by the Clark County School District at the time of his arrest, was transferred into the custody of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility on Aug. 21.

‘Most Instagrammable Pop-up in America’ opens in Las Vegas tomorrow

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — HAPPY PLACE, hailed as ‘the most Instagrammable pop-up in America’, is opening Friday in Mandalay Bay with a mission to turn Sin City into “Grin City”.

The exhibit features 15,000 square feet of whimsical rooms, from a Super Bloom room to the world’s largest indoor confetti dome.

“I think people need about an hour of their time to just do nothing but put a smile on their face …, founder Jared Paul told Las Vegas Now’s Lindsey Simon. “This is a place where for one hour all you have to do is leave your troubles at the door and just come and smile.” He especially hopes it will be a place for parents to bring their children for an hour filled of positivity and joy.

Robocall fight brings states, phone companies together

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Phone companies have agreed to cooperate with state attorneys general to protect consumers from illegal robocalls and make it easier for authorities to investigate and prosecute violators.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford and AGs from every other state and Washington D.C. have agreed with 11 phone companies to make changes at the network and consumer level, and to do a better job of identifying the violators.

The participating phone companies include AT&T, Bandwidth, CenturyLink, Charter, Comcast, Consolidated, Frontier, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, Verizon and Windstream. The companies will continue to optimize robocall protections as technology and scammer techniques change.

Work on roads, parking lots starts at Lake Mead, lasting into December

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The cone zone is creeping into Lake Mead National Recreation Area as $5 million in road projects begin.

From Willow Beach to the northern end of the 1.5 million-acre park, 75 miles of roads and parking areas will undergo work during daylight hours on weekdays through mid-December.

The song was created by CG5 and published on YouTube on July 16. It’s garnered more than 2.5 million views.
