Kayaker who drowned pulled from Washoe Lake near Reno

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of a kayaker who apparently drowned in Washoe Lake between Reno and Carson City.

Divers from the Washoe County Sheriff’s HASTY team and the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District found the body Wednesday evening under water about 7 feet deep.

Witnesses reported a man in a kayak went under the surface and didn’t come up Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Harmon says he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

Hawaiian group stages protests at mountain considered sacred

HONOLULU (KHON) – The upcoming construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on a dormant volcano on the big island of Hawaii is creating controversy. Despite arrests, demonstrators gather daily to protest the the telescope, saying the mountain is sacred.

The protesters remain at the base of Mauna Kea access road in a standoff with law enforcement and state officials. One of the recurring themes is access to the mountain.

Mauna Kea is currently the site of 13 massive telescopes used by researchers around the world to study the skies. The $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope will be one of the most advanced when built.

Driver involved in deadly crash pleads guilty

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A driver charged in a crash that left one person dead and two others injured entered a guilty plea Friday.

Victor Castro-Solano, 20, pleaded guilty to felony reckless driving for a crash that occurred March 8 on Nellis Boulevard north of E. Sahara Avenue, killing 47-year-old Michael Guild. According to police, Castro-Solano lost control and struck three pedestrians at a bus stop structure.

Initially, he was charged with felony DUI but a toxicology report taken after the crash showed he had no narcotics or alcohol in his system. The charges were reduced.
