Vice President Pence to visit Las Vegas

Vice President Mike Pence will be joined by Nevada Senator Dean Heller Thursday at the grand opening of "AFwerX Vegas," a new high-tech defense facility for the air force.

After delivering remarks there around 2:45 p.m., Pence is scheduled to stop by Nellis Air Force Base to speak with airmen and their families.

Nellis Thunderbirds commander relieved of duty

The commander of the Thunderbirds, Lt. Col. Jason Heard, has been relieved of duty, according to a news release from Nellis Air Force Base.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one that is ultimately in the best interests of the Thunderbird team. I am personally grateful for Jason's dedication to the 2017 season," Brig. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt said.

The news release said, Leavitt lost confidence in Heard's leadership and risk management style and determined new leadership was needed to ensure the highest levels of pride, precision and professionalism within the team.

Nellis Air Force pilot killed in test and training range accident

A lieutenant at Nellis Air Force Base was killed during a training mission Tuesday night.

According to Nellis Air Force Base, Lt. Col. Eric Schultz was in an aircraft when it crashed while flying a training mission on the Nevada Test and Training Range approximately 100 miles northwest of Nellis AFB.

The aircraft was assigned to Air Force Materiel Command. Lt.Col Eric Schultz died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Nellis Air Force Base said additional information involving the accident would be released at a later date.

2 A-10C Thunderbolts crash at Nevada Test Site

Two A-10C Thunderbolt II jets from Nellis Air Force Base crashed on the Nevada Test Site Wednesday night. Both pilots were able to safely eject.

The aircraft, which are assigned to the 57th Wing, were on a routine training mission when the crash occurred around 8 p.m.

Both pilots were transported to the Mike O'Callaghan Military Medical Center at Nellis for evaluation.

Metro investigates early morning shooting death

One man is dead and another wounded in an early morning shooting near Nellis Air Force Base.

Metro homicide detective, Lt. Dan McGrath, said it started as an argument outside the Craigmont Villas apartments on North Lamont St, near Craig Rd and Nellis Blvd. That fight escalated into an exchange of gunfire around 12:40 a.m.

The victims were transported to University Medical Center. An African-American man in his 30's died. Another man was shot in the leg and should recover. The second victim may have been an innocent bystander, according to police.

One of the gunmen claims the shooting was self defense. He was not wounded, stayed on the scene, and called 911 to report the shooting.

Metro police say the man who was not injured used a high-powered rifle and that some of the bullets went through the walls of other apartment units. Officers went to each unit to make sure no one else was hurt... Read More

WARNING: Scammers use NHP and names of charitable groups to seek donations

Scammers are preying on the kind hearts of Nevada residents, and they're using the Nevada Highway Patrol to do it.

NHP said it had received several complaints from citizens who said they were being solicited for donations on behalf of various police charitable originations.

NHP said the scam artists use a local phone number to conduct the con, and according to some callers, they were solicited from someone posing as a representative of the American Association of State Troopers, along with the Officer Down Charities for the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Nevada Highway Patrol itself.

When a person refuses to donate, NHP said witnesses told them the scammer would threaten unfair treatment from Troopers in the future.

"We want the community to be aware of this fraudulent activity and be sure to protect their personal information," NHP said... Read More

Suspect arrested in California for homicide in Las Vegas

An arrest has been made following the death of a woman Monday morning at an apartment on South Nellis Boulevard.

Frederick Daniels, 41, was taken into custody in Anaheim, California on a warrant from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He is awaiting extradition to Las Vegas.

According to Metro Police, the victim was visiting her friend, who lived in the apartment, when she was shot by Daniels. He fled to California after the shooting... Read More
