Doctors push for increase in age to buy marijuana

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A group of doctors is urging states that allow legal recreational marijuana to push the minimum age for buyers to 25 or older.

In a recent New York Times editorial, they noted that marijuana can have a “deleterious impact on cognitive development in adolescents, impairing executive function, processing speed, memory, attention span, and concentration.” They cite long-term studies that show substantial negative effects of marijuana use on brain development of teens and young adults.

Retail marijuana was passed by Nevada voters in 2016, and legal sales began at licensed dispensaries in the summer of 2017. Like alcohol, marijuana buyers in Nevada must provide legal proof that they are 21 or older. ... Read More

Health District declares acute hepatitis A outbreak in Clark County

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed a significant increase in the number of acute hepatitis A cases in Clark County.

Between Jan. 1 and May 31, there have been 37 reported acute hepatitis A cases, compared to 17 reported cases in 2018, no reported case in 2017, and six reported cases in 2016 during the same period. People who are at increased risk for infection of hepatitis A include people who use drugs and those experiencing homelessness. ... Read More

City of Las Vegas to launch a reality show about government

LAS VEGAS (AP) – The city of Las Vegas is launching a reality show on streaming services that will tell behind-the-scenes stories about how the government navigates local issues.

Las Vegas officials announced Monday that the show “Inside Vegas” will premiere Thursday and be available on Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV and the city’s GoVegas app.

The show’s first season includes three episodes detailing a massage parlor suspected of prostitution, a nonprofit in trouble with police and the city’s grappling with party houses and short-term rentals.
